Self Defense Does Not Have to be Lethal

By Butch Jones

I think all of us at one time or another have thought about what we would do if confronted by a mugger, or burglar. Some think they know what they would do, however, many are not sure and for some the thought of having and using a firearm is not something they want to do.  What are the options? Self-defense comes in many forms. The first and most talked about is the firearm. Then there is the baseball bat or other blunt instrument, which is not especially useful inside a motorhome, due to space constraints. The knife is next and quite messy. Hand to hand combat or martial arts are also methods that can be effective if you are skilled in their use and have the flexibility to bend, fold and spindle as needed to affect any damage to the assailant.

I came across a weapon in the latest issue of Family RVing which sounds interesting. This is the Byrna SD , the un-gun. It is not classified as a firearm by the federal government and does not require background checks or a concealed carry permit, according to the manufacturer. It does not fire traditional ammunition but fires a kinetic projectile or a pepper spray projectile. The kinetic projectile is made of hard plastic, which leaves a pretty sizable lump and blister on the chest of the person receiving the projectile and the pepper spray projectile contains Oleoresin Capsicum which is one of the most powerful natural real pepper. CO2 is the propellant, which comes in disposable small canisters similar to a pellet gun. These weapons are available in several different finishes. The manufacturer also states that it can be carried across state lines. Below are two examples as well as a kit that is available.

So, if you are hesitant about the thought of shooting someone with real bullets, but still want to keep yourself and family safe, check out the Byrna website and see if this might be for you.

Wishing everyone safe travels.
