Dogwood Rally at The Refuge on Roanoke Island in Wanchese, NC - Summary
![]() |
| 2023 The Refuge on Roanoke Island |
Making the best of it! The Dogwood Rally at The Refuge on Roanoke Island was held for the second straight year Sept 22-24, 2023. Your hosts were Pace & JoAnn Mimms and Dave & Nanette Meyer. We had 19 members (10 coaches) in attendance. Unfortunately, we also had 1 uninvited guest – Tropical Storm Ophelia!
The rally officially started on Friday, but most everyone arrived Wednesday and Thursday. So, in pre-rally mode, 11 of us had a nice dinner Wednesday at the Landing Grill. Thursday was a “lazy day” for the most part with more coaches arriving and we had a beautiful day to set up the pavilion for the “planned” rally events. We enjoyed happy hour and a potluck dinner in the pavilion. Because the weather forecast wasn’t looking too great, we discussed alternative plans.
I have to say thanks to the attendees – everyone was flexible and agreed to make the best of it – whatever “it” was gonna be. We broke up around 8pm and most of us picked up our outdoor equipment.
On Friday, we started the day watching and wondering what the storm forecast was going to be – at this time it was still just a coastal storm. Anticipating heavy rain and strong winds, regardless of the storm’s designation, several of us brought our slides in. Well, the rain and wind started about 10am just as Pace & Dave headed out to get the shrimp. After Pace went back out to pick up the chicken, we decided to meet at the pavilion at 2:30pm and eat early.
By then it was raining pretty hard and the wind had picked up, but the tarps we put up did a great job of blocking the wind in the pavilion. We had happy hour and dinner together. We postponed the games we had planned. Everyone got their fill, and we packed up the leftovers and went back to our coaches. We then found out that the storm turned into Tropical Storm Ophelia at 2pm!! So, we hunkered down in our turtled-up coaches and rode it out. The wind was a bit crazy, and the coach rocked quite a bit, but we did ok! We watched TV, switching between the weather channel and a movie and finally turned it off around 11pm after the wind had mostly died down. And I will add that a few folks said they slept very well with the wind rocking the coach… HUH?
On Saturday – Honestly, we did sleep pretty well too!! So glad for that. It was still raining and windy and we knew the backside of the storm was still coming our way, so we decided to put our breakfast off until Sunday. Happy to report the tarps continued to hold up around the pavilion.
It remained pretty breezy all day, but we did put the slides back out mid-afternoon. We combined happy hour and dinner at the Sugar Creek restaurant. We had a great time, a good meal, and once again we enjoyed each other’s company.
We decided to put off the cake & ice cream to Sunday night as well, so we cut some pieces and for the Braggs and the Fishers because they were leaving after breakfast.
Sunday morning, we started breakfast at 9am to accommodate the early departures. We enjoyed eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits & gravy, fruit, juice, pastries, etc.
We met back at the pavilion for happy hour and dinner at 4pm. Everyone brought their leftovers back and we finally got our cake & ice cream dessert! Everyone enjoyed it! We didn’t do any of the games or the raffle…we were all tired and just enjoyed visiting with each other.
Most of us travelled home on Monday.
So, to sum it up – Nothing went as planned but we had a great group and a great time, despite the weather. Hopefully next time the weather will be better!
By the way - The campground facilities and staff were outstanding, and “Fun, Food, and Friendship” were definitely in abundance.
On behalf of your Hosts, we want to sincerely thank all of you for attending this rally, and special thanks to those who assisted us during the rally.

The Refuge on Roanoke Island Rally - Summary

| The Refuge on Roanoke Island |
The Dogwood Rally at The Refuge on Roanoke Island Campground in Wanchese, NC was held October 14-16 and hosted by the Buelows, Meyers, and Mimms. The Refuge campground is very basic, but we had all we needed to have a great time, including waterfront sites and a pavilion to gather in. And the weather was beautiful for October.
In addition to the hosts, attendees included the Alexanders, Allens, Brinkleys, Greenes, Greenwoods, Herberts, Kuikens, Schwartzes, and Tylers, along with Daniel & Elizabeth Heflin and Randy Scott, guests of the Tylers. Unfortunately, the Schwartzes were not feeling well and ended up having COVID, so they isolated and weren't able to participate in the rally. As of October 22nd, they were feeling much better. And the Robisons and Tenneys had also signed up for the rally, but due to family issues and illness, they were unable to attend. We hope all is going better.

| Ed, Clint, & Henry |
The official rally didn't begin until Friday, but many of the attendees arrived on Thursday, so we all gathered at the pavilion for socializing and heavy hors d'oeuvres.
Friday day was open, and several attendees did a little sightseeing, shopping, and having lunch at one of the many good seafood restaurants in the area.
Ed decided to do some fishing and took Henry Kuiken and Bubba Allen along. Not sure how many or how big the fish were that they caught but be sure to ask Ed to show you the new fishing wardrobe he has, compliments of his fishing buddies.
Friday evening included a social hour with snacks and a delicious meal provided by the hosts. And for dessert, we had a delicious cake and ice cream provided by the Meyers to celebrate the Buelow's and Mimms’ wedding anniversaries. Thank you, David and Nanette, for the beautiful cake and special thoughts.
After dinner we had a 50/25/25 raffle with $150.00 in cash going to 3 lucky winners, and numerous other prizes were also raffled off. We also had a little gas fire going until the Buelow's fireplace was throwing off a little more fire than expected. (LOL) No harm done and a fun evening.
Saturday morning, we had a great breakfast with meats/fruit/juice provided by hosts, and potluck provided by attendees. This worked out really well and we had a nice variety of dishes to share. After breakfast, we had a Dogwood business meeting conducted by President Ed Herbert. Minutes will be published for that meeting.
Saturday afternoon we took a tour of the Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station, which was set up by co-host Pace Mimms, thank you Pace. We had the opportunity to tour the entire facility including 2 boats. The crew there welcomed us with opened arms, and were very courteous, professional, and knowledgeable. They explained the history of the station along with their mission, and freely answered our questions. We spent about 2 hours doing the tour and it was very informative and enjoyable. Plans are to send a thank you letter to Coast
Guard headquarters.
Saturday evening included a social hour at the pavilion and dinner at the Sugar Creek seafood restaurant. Food was delicious and service very good. We definitely recommend.
Sunday morning, we had a continental breakfast, and the rally was supposed to end. However, a good number of attendees decided to stay until Monday, so we gathered again Sunday afternoon for socializing and a dinner of leftovers, which we had an abundance of.
In summary, we think it is safe to say that all of the attendees had a great time, and "Fun, Food, and Friendship” were in abundance. Thank you for attending and for your help. See you next time.

Carolina Crossroads Rally - Summary
First, I want to thank this chapter for allowing Wayne and I to be your host for this rally, held at Carolina Crossroads RV Resort, in Roanoke Rapids, NC. We are new to the chapter and had only been to the Urbanna Festival last October. So, we were handling this not really knowing what was expected.
Most all coaches arrived Thursday, so we threw together a small reception Thursday afternoon. We split into 2 groups for different restaurants on Thursday evening, and returned to camp for a fire that evening.
Friday was also a free day, so we visited with new friends, and several of us went into town to the Riverside Mill - our main unofficial sponsor of the Welcome bags. Paula there put out a special display just for us for the weekend, offering lemonade and goodies, as well as a separate display of her vendors gifts and usable items for the '"camper". Friday evening, we cooked on site and had a great time visiting and getting to know new friends.
Saturday plans were changed just a bit as we had intended a pontoon boat ride. Wednesday we had to make the decision to bring or not due to weather forecast. So, we did not. Weather turned out to be beautiful, so sorry guys!! The pool offered relief from the heat, and folks went and did their own thing for the day. We met back for a social time, then went to a local steakhouse restaurant called Haggerty's.
I think the highlight for the weekend was the Scavenger hunt. All seemed to enjoy and everyone participated in some fashion. Even others at the campground wanted to get involved, posed for pictures, and helped with clues. After dinner Saturday, back at the gazebo we gave out the prizes for most points and had laughs with the great and unique ways our group determined answers to the clues.
Sunday was goodbye for most, so we had pastries and drinks and wished all safe travels home.
