Hey all:
As a new member and new to the RV, JoAnn and myself quickly found out that the travel trailer was just not big enough to tour the USA in, so we traded for a 37’ Montana 5th Wheel and took our first trip a few weeks ago - went from our home in Powhatan, Va to Georgetown, Ky where we were able to see the “Ark Encounter”, Creation Museum , horse farms, and eat dinner along the banks of the Ohio River overlooking Cincinnati. Our friends and fellow Dogwood members ( Roger & Andres Monaghan ) diverted from their trip and came by to check on us, but we were doing just fine and enjoyed their visit.
We had to go thru West Virginia to get to Kentucky - over the mountains and thru the woods we went - only to stop overnight at very small ( 19 sites ) campground - no one there but a couple of campers and a “honor” box to collect the camping fee. This is as close to roughing it as we want, but as we travel more I am sure that we will later consider this stopover “as one of the better ones". It was good practice as we kept the rig hooked up to the truck only putting the front landing gear down for extra support.
Once leaving Kentucky we headed to Pigeon Forge, Tn. The trip was a “hoot” as I have never seen it rain so hard. Lost the sewer hose along the way ( wonder what the vehicle behind us thought of us as 20 feet of sewer line popped out of its compartment ), but somehow we made it to Pigeon Forge. We had reservations at a campground right in Pigeon Forge which advertised that they had completely remodeled - they failed to mention that there sites were 90 degrees off of a very narrow roadway and designed for smaller rigs. Took us about an hour to get in and set up ( Oh I failed to mention that the sewer connection ran uphill from the site - ended up running 20’ of hose to reach their sewer drain connection and with a little bit of creative ingenuity we were OK.
Our greatest fear was running out of diesel and not able to find a truck stop or a service station that we would be able to pull into without unhooking, but on this initial trip all was ok.
Hope to see you guys at Andrea and Roger’s Lake Anna rally.
