Fiesta Key RV Resort & Marina

Editor’s Note:  Fiesta Key RV Resort is an Encore RV Park in Long Key, FL, surrounded by the beautiful Gulf of Mexico ocean views and nearby Long Key State Park.

I have not posted to the Dogwood blog in a while so figured I would provide a quick update. During our snow birding this year we bought a week at Fiesta Key in late April figured it would be easier and a bit cheaper. So, our scheduled stay was from April 15 – departing April 22. Well while here (yes, I am writing this from Fiesta Key – I decided to see if I could get a couple extra days added to our stay using our Encore membership. Ureka – I got 4 days added so now departure is April 26. Pretty good I must say. So today (April 23) I decided to throw the dice again and I hit double 6’s. I got a week added so now we are departing on May 2. There is a daily surcharge but for $225 I got 12 extra days in the Keys. Needless to say, I am going to give this a shot one more time later this week to see if I can extend to May 5, we will see. I only included this info in case my fellow Thousand Trail/Encore Dogwood members want to give this a shot. For years now I have been bragging about the Lobster Rubens at the Keys Fishery so the day after we arrived, I told Sharon I would go get lunch and off I went to Marathon, FL to get my Lobster Ruben and of course something for Sharon. All the way down I was singing to the 60’s channel and boy was I in a good mood. As I got closer my mouth started watering. I parked, went up the counter and there on the menu was the “treasure at the end of the rainbow” Lobster Rubens $29.95. That was a bit steep but since Dave and Nanette were paying for the first one and I was hoping to talk Jim and Susan into paying for the second one all was well. After that I guess I am on my own. I was ready to dine knowing Dave could afford it. I looked at the lady and proudly ordered a Lobster Ruben to which I got the worst 2 words in history “We’re Out”. WHAT!!! I asked her if she was kidding but no, they had no Lobsters. It appears the “season was over, for now”. She said they may be able to get some toward the end of the week so I will check back. I figured Dave dodged that bullet – for now. So, I got some other seafood and back to Fiesta Key for lunch. The ride back was not near as much fun as the ride down. I kept reminding myself “cup ½ full”. I called yesterday and they have lobster so Dave and Jim are back on the hook.

Not to worry I will send you guys pictures so you know what you paid for. I also have a classic Key West Southern Most Point photo, a really good Fiesta Key Palm Tree pic, and something on the lunch menu assuming you can catch him – tastes like chicken.

Next it appears it was my turn to deal with nuisance RV issues. First off, my ice maker crapped out. Not a big deal, replacing it is a 20-minute job, but the hard part is finding the right replacement ice maker. Fortunately, I had replaced it about 6 years ago so I still had the Amazon order info. I re-ordered it again and now have ice coming out of the door dispenser. Next on the driver slide out that rubber thingy screwed to the bottom that seals up the slide when closed came loose. No problem I filled the old holes with toothpicks dipped in wood glue and shoved them into the hole. The next day I cut the toothpicks with a pair of wire cutters, took a hammer and gently tapped the rough edges to smooth them up and re-screwed the rubber thingy back up. BTW the toothpick dipped in wood glue and shoved in a hole that has been stripped out is a great tip, file it for the next time those pesky door hinges come unscrewed – you’re welcome.  Next time we moved and the slide came out again the rubber thingy came loose just not as bad. I took a closer look and decided to get some industrial strength double sided tape and attach it to the to the top of the rubber thingy after re-filling holes with toothpicks. This time I moved it a bit further toward the outside of the slide and re-screwed existing holes and adding screw holes between each to give the thing a bit more strength. So far so good. On our trip to the Keys, Sharon has the seat laid back and foot rest up. When we got here I was setting up and got the dreaded alarm that is typically associated to the driver’s or passenger’s seat. I did a quick check but the alarm persisted so I turned off the key and will deal with it in a day or two. Turns out it followed the FM Principle. I checked it a couple days later, no problem. For those of you who are not fully aware of the FM Principle it is simply “Freaking Magic”, laugh if you like but it works. On top of all of this my Breville Barista Cappuccino maker crapped out. I have had this for some 8+ years so really can’t complain. I took it apart and found the issue – a soldering issue caused stuff to short out. Rather than try to fix it and find other problems I just gave it a humane burial and bought a cheap cappuccino maker. I actually have a spare Breville Barista cappuccino maker new in the box at one of the kids’ house. But they are in VA so when I get back I will get that and leave this cheap one there as a spare. Bottom line I still have a morning 4 shot latte to get me going. Finally Sharon open the frig door and a black thingy fell down. Well that black thingy was the magnet in the door seal which has deteriorated – again the FM Principle. Not always a good Principle as you can tell. I have ordered one, easy to replace but for now we just double check the door shuts.

That is about it. We are heading back to VA Beach for a Newmar Rally May 14 – 21. Then back to Americamps for a month or so. We are going to summer at Brunswick Sunset Park in NC. Come by anytime.

Happy RVing and Safe Travels

Were you accompanied by Murry The Mouse or any other such? Here's hoping not. The KEYS are fun. Congrats.
