Safety Article – Mar/Apr 2026

Speaking of safety: Being stranded on the side of the road is dangerous.  There is a long list of issues that might force us to “pull over” in our RVs, but those of us with diesel engines, the dreaded failure of a DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) -system component is just that: DREADED.  The article below is from the Freightliner Chassis Owners Club (FCOC) regarding DEF-equipped diesel rigs.  But for those who own 5th wheels or diesel-powered Class C’s, the article may apply to you if your diesel engine is post 2010.  Fortunately for my Cummins pusher, I have not been stranded on the road, but there has been a scare:  I had a “derate” (power reduction) when the exhaust NOx sensor reported an “out of range” condition with a Check Engine light glowing and a derate that I estimated to be about a 20% reduction.

From FCOC:

“Recent EPA updates are bringing some meaningful changes for diesel RV owners, and this time it directly impacts those of you who already own a coach.  Here is what is actually changing.  There are no new rules forcing you out of your current coach. Diesel remains a supported platform for motorhomes.

“The DEF system is being fixed for current owners:  The EPA is not just focusing on new engines. They are encouraging manufacturers to make changes to engines that are already on the road.  That includes two key things.   First, software updates.  Manufacturers are being directed to update DEF system programming in existing engines to reduce unnecessary shutdowns and derates.  That means instead of being forced into an immediate slowdown:  You get more warning; You get more time to address the issue; The system is designed to avoid stranding you.  Second, potential fixes to known DEF issues:  The EPA is now requiring manufacturers to provide data on DEF failures and is looking at forcing fixes or corrections to engines already in use.

“Less aggressive derates going forward:  EPA guidance is also changing how engines respond when something goes wrong.  Instead of immediate power loss:  Derates are being delayed and softened; Owners get significantly more time and miles before any major restriction kicks in; This is a direct response to years of complaints about being sidelined by sensor issues.

“What this means for you:  Your current coach is not being restricted or phased out;  The DEF system behavior is being made more practical; Manufacturers are being pushed to fix known problem areas in existing engines; The goal is fewer breakdown situations caused by emissions components.
